A new reason to get married

7% of Americans get married to obtain insurance through their spouse's employer. McCain's plan to decouple insurance from employment might result in 7% fewer marriages.

  1. I wonder how many people get married in order to deal with our dysfunctional system of dealing with late-in-life issues.

For example. If you're not married, and the person with whom you're living needs to have life-and-death medical decisions made, you're out. In fact, you may not even be allowed to visit your partner.

If you're not married, in many states, a will elaving you the estate of the person with whom you're living is much more easily contested.

And there's more. And these apply even to people who could be married (mixed-gender relationships), but choose not to be.
