When do incentives fail?

When tasks are more open ended and complex, requiring more thought, incentives may fail.  Instead, try autonomy, mastery, and purpose.

  1. Great video, the art work is impressive! I would add http://www.khanacademy.org/ to the list of examples at the end of the video. The creator, Salmon Khan, clearly now has autonomy (vs. working for a hedge fund), mastery of subjects (as evident in his web content) and a has higher purpose ("to teach the world").

The key would be to find a way to deliver autonomy, mastery and purpose to workers in an organization, without having the workers walking away. Who get the IP rights?

  2. Could you provide a citation of the MIT/U Chicago/Carnegie Mellon study referenced in the video?
